Talbot County Department of Parks and Recreation (TCPR) recently welcomed James Madison University student Cathryne Christopher for a summer internship that provided hands-on experience in all aspects of the department’s operations.

Christopher, a Sport and Recreation Management major with a General Business minor, spent three months with the department. Unlike a traditional internship program, this opportunity came about when Christopher reached out directly to Parks and Recreation with her resume and cover letter seeking practical experience in the field. Her initiative led to an interview and a summer packed with learning and community engagement opportunities.

The Talbot County Office of Communications spoke with Christopher before she returns to college in the fall.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your role?
One reason I’ve enjoyed this internship so much is that each day was different. Each week, I had the chance to shadow a different facet of the department, which gave me an incredible perspective of Parks and Recreation. Most days started at the Community Center, checking emails and helping with administrative tasks. Then, I’d connect with the person I was shadowing and dive into the day’s projects.

What’s been your favorite event, program, or project you’ve helped with so far?
My favorite program has definitely been summer camp. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes preparation involved, and I really enjoyed helping Ellie, our Program Coordinator, with marketing, organization, and planning. I also loved interacting with the kids, their families, and the amazing camp counselors.

Have you had any fun or unexpected moments while working with the community?
Coming into this internship, I knew I’d work with the public, but I didn’t expect to meet such a welcoming and friendly group of people. From the incredible staff that feels like family, to the vibrant patrons, I’ve made connections I hope will last well beyond my time here.

How has this internship changed your view of local government or public service?
This experience showed me how much effort goes into maintaining our County facilities. I have a newfound appreciation for the staff behind the scenes—especially our facilities team, who take so much pride in their work and keep everything running smoothly.

How do you hope to apply what you’ve learned in your future education or career?
I hope to take the skills I’ve learned—from marketing strategies to programming to administrative operations—and use them to build my professional experience. This internship has given me a strong foundation that will open doors for future opportunities in recreation management.

What’s your favorite spot in any Talbot County park or facility—and why?
My favorite spot is the Talbot County Community Center because it truly feels like the heart of TCPR. There’s always something happening—public skate, sports clinics, summer camp, community events. It’s a place for everyone.

If you could plan your own dream Parks and Rec event, what would it be?
If I could plan my dream event, it would be a summer regatta. I’d involve the Historical Society to highlight our rich history, have watermen showcase their work, and invite local vendors for food and crafts. It would be like the Waterfowl Festival—but in summer—with a big boat race. It would be a great way to celebrate everything that makes Talbot County special.

“Cathryne brought an incredible level of enthusiasm and initiative to her internship,” said Emily Gilmer, Director of Talbot County Parks and Recreation. “She embraced every opportunity to learn and experience all facets of our department. We were thrilled to have her on our team and hope this internship inspires her as she continues her education and future career in recreation management.
